Open your own Instagram and watch your thumb for one minute. You are not choosing videos. You are rejecting them, about three a second, and the ones that survive got about two seconds to earn the third.

That is the whole job of a hook. Not to be clever. To buy the third second.

Most beginners spend those two seconds on themselves

Watch a first reel and you will nearly always find the same opening: a name, a greeting, a promise about what is coming. Hello everyone, welcome back to my page, today I am going to tell you about...

Every word of that is spent on you. None of it is spent on the person holding the phone, who does not know you, did not come looking for you, and is being asked to wait while you introduce yourself.

Cut it. Start where the interest starts.

Four openings that work, and why

  • The cost. Name the money, the time or the mistake up front. I lost eleven thousand rupees learning this. A number is specific, and specific is believable.
  • The contradiction. Say the thing that argues with what they already believe. Posting daily is why your page is stuck. They have to stay to find out whether you are wrong.
  • The mid-scene start. Begin at the interesting part and explain later. Films have done this for a century.
  • The named audience. If you are a housewife with two hours a day, this one is yours. Everyone else scrolls, and that is fine. You are not trying to hold everyone.
A hook is a promise. The rest of the video is you paying it.

The part nobody tells you

The hook is not only the words. It is the frame, the first sound and your face, all arriving together. A strong line delivered from a dark corner of a room, in a flat voice, with a stray bedsheet in shot, is not a strong hook. The viewer has already read the picture before they have heard the sentence.

So the same two seconds have to carry three things at once: something worth hearing, a face lit well enough to read, and sound clean enough that nobody has to work at it. That is why hooks and shooting get taught close together. They are the same two seconds.

How to get better at this by Sunday

Take five reels that stopped your own thumb this week. Write down only their first line, nothing else. Five lines on one page. You will see the pattern inside ten minutes, and it will be one of the four above.

Then take your last reel and write six different first lines for it. Not one. Six. The first is always the obvious one, and the obvious one is what everybody else opened with.

Pick the sixth.

Hooks, script structures and calls to action are day six of the 15, and the shooting day sits right beside it on purpose.
